In 2005, at the young age of 8 months old, my daughter (our firstborn) was diagnosed with multiple food allergies. Little did we know that this dreaded news from our doctor would change more than just our diet, it would change our life!
An anti-inflammatory diet, free from gluten, dairy, soy, and so many other things, was what her little body needed to grow and thrive. This was scary territory as a parent, making food replacements to keep our child safe, while still wanting her to enjoy the foods she was eating.
Over the next several years, I got more confident in experimenting in my own kitchen with new, allergy friendly replacements to some of our family favorites. In this same period of time, I had three other children, two of whom also have multiple life-threatening allergies, just like their oldest sister.
Due to the fact that I am the cook in the family, my biggest goal became safely feeding my family, with foods they all enjoyed, and looked forward to eating (quite a task!). I soon found myself sharing my new homemade recipes for allergen-friendly replacements with family and friends alike, only to be met with excitement about how great the replacements actually tasted!! Sharing the resources, the foods and recipes that were making it easier to eat an allergy friendly diet, became my passion. We know food has the ability to give us an emotional and nutritional boost, it acts as the center of social gatherings, and is the focus of many gifts. With this in mind I also co-founded an allergy support group Food Free Fun for Everyone and Vancouver Allergy Awareness Network. I enjoy supporting people in the food allergy community through different food restrictive diets.
Inspired by our own challenging walk through changing our diet and eating yummy-tasting alternatives, we wanted to share these recipes with you.
